If you were to start a diet, during the holiday season, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, is likely the worst time to do it. It’s hard enough to avoid all the temptation that surrounds you on a daily basis, but during the holiday season it can be downright impossible.
During the holiday season, this can be particularly difficult. Office parties, after work parties, get togethers with friends and families can be difficult if you are struggling with your weight. There are three basic strategies for dealing with this, and I’ll go into each one a little bit. That way, you can choose the best one for you.
The first is the best, and the hardest. Pure willpower. To feel that strong desire to shove all the cookies you can see in your mouth, but stand there smiling and not eating anything. Then going home and eating a bowl of oatmeal. It’s no wonder this is the least popular strategy. While you’ll feel really good if you keep to this, it won’t be much fun.
Next is pre planning and avoidance strategies. This means to fill your stomach up with water and low calorie fillers. That way those cookies, that cake, those jugs of eggnog won’t seem so tempting. Of course, this requires planning, and a strong defense mentality. While less difficult than pure willpower, this isn’t much fun either.
The most popular strategy is to just suspend all hope completely of not gaining any weight, and eat to your hearts content. That way you can fully enjoy yourself, and any holiday cheer you may find. The obvious downside to this is that sooner or later, you’re going to have to pay the piper.
What may be the most sensible thing to do is to combine these strategies into a plan that works best for you. Maybe allow yourself on or two events to really let yourself loose and eat an drink like there’s no tomorrow. That way, you can have your cake, and eat it as well.
