How does Chiropractic work?

When you are diagnosed with a problem most medical doctors will want to remove the problem, or correct it with surgery, or they may want to burn or poison it if it is a tumor or parasite. Almost every form of treatment today does one of those things to something in the body, but chiropractors don’t do any of those things. With the majority of people used to having medical treatment be dangerous or toxic, chiropractic draws the suspicion on some. With the focus on adjusting your body to be put into position which allows it to heal itself through its own energy, chiropractors enjoy the success without making their patients experience any down time for recovery.

With the numbers of healed and satisfied chiropractic clients growing every day, the overall medical establishment has granted it more and more credibility with each passing year.

The great part about chiropractic treatment is that even though you may not understand how it works, just can still appreciate the benefits of how you feel afterward. The field of chiropractic is the third most sought after medical discipline available to students, so that gives you an idea of how competitive a business it is. Many other forms of treatment require the patient to use drugs, but chiropractic treatment is drug free which draws an even larger audience.

What exactly defines Chiropractic?

Comprised of 2 Greek words, Chiropractic literally translates into something similar to “the practice utilizing the hands”. One image that comes to mind may be some martial art or judo throw, but chiropractic medicine is far more safe and appealing to clients than that.

Sometimes joints will become rigid and lose range of motion, so a chiropractor will forcefully move the joint in order to align it appropriately to free up nerve signals from the spine. These movements are referred to as “manipulation” and can properly align your spine and other joints so that you will eventually experience reduced or eliminated pain.

Are Chiropractors Normal Doctors?

In undergraduate studies, a chiropractor takes the same medical or pre-medicine classes and credits as any other medical doctor. The number of laboratory, clinical and classroom hours for each chiropractor is 4200 hours. Upon completed the rigorous undergraduate study, every chiropractors moves on to complete their doctorate degree, which involves learning the same difficult and complex knowledge that any other medical professional is required to know.

The practice is different due to the difference in the application and use of the knowledge. Most doctors are trained in pharmacology and the chiropractors are trained in spine health.

Will A Chiropractor Assist to Fix My Spinal Column?

Once you have injured your body, particularly your back, it may take you a very long time to get back into shape. Many people just try to tough it out and if you turn to a traditional MD for treatment you may be prescribed the usual stupor inducing concoctions of pain pills, rest or exercises that take time to help out.

With the utilization of rapid movements which are designed to reposition your bones to properly line up, chiropractors re-aligning your body. Some people are a little taken aback by the twisting or cracking that accompanies any good adjustment, but don’t fear. Afterward, there can be some minor pain or discomfort but that does decrease rapidly in most cases. You will feel better once that soreness goes away, since you are better aligned now.

To be most successful, Chiropractic treatment must be utilized regularly to be effective. Usually one to two times per week is enough to bring about proper alignment while allowing the body enough time to heal itself too. Sometimes a comprehensive chiropractic treatment plan will involve several treatments over the course of several months, and others may only need to visit once a month, but either way successful spinal re-alignment can be an involved process.

Your chiropractor will not ask you to do anything that you are not comfortable with, so don’t worry about that. When aligning your spine, the doctor may put you into some fairly awkward positions, and rapidly move your body to stimulate the adjustment. This is done to make manipulation easier, after all if your bones do not move, it will not help you get better.

After aligning certain joints, the doctor may adjust other smaller joints that may be limited in their range of motion as well. Any additional adjustments will be applied to each joint in succession to re-align you as needed to be. You will probably be finished off by some time on the roller table and then you can visit again in a week or so.

Most Chiropractic patients experience short term pain reduction or elimination and more range of motion in the effected joint. Look for a significant reduction in back pain and a great increase in back mobility and flexibility as you progress through your treatment.
